38/1 Ranger Battalion was a special warfare battalion of the 38^th Ranger Expeditionary Force, attached to UNSC Special Operations Command Centauri (UNSCSOCCEN), UNSC Special Operations Command (UNSCSOCOM). It was designated as "Battalion I" within the 38^th Ranger, and was based out of AFB Otis in Massachusetts of the former United States of America, in the North American Continental Theater of Operations.

38/1 Ranger would fight valiantly in the Second Battle of Earth, and would put itself on the front line to cover UNSC military personnel and civilians as they retreated from the Northeastern U.S., escaping the combat zone. 38/1 Ranger would even repulse a Scarab assault on AFB Otis, buying precious time while civilians loaded into military transports to escape. Eventually, 38/1 Ranger would be designated as a high-priority target by the Covenant assault fleet because of its courageous fighting. The entire Cape Cod area would be glassed and bombarded by Covenant cruisers.

All of 38/1 Ranger Battalion would lose their lives in sacrifice for the civilian escape.
