The 97th fleet was a back-up plan for the second battle of earth. As the Brute fleet arrived at earth, the UNSC decided to load as many civilians as possible on to colony ships and escape earth, so that if the UNSC lost, their would still be human controlled planets.

There were 20 colony ships in the fleet, plus 20 UNSC ships. Two colony ships were destroyed upon exiting earths gravity well, only one UNSC frigate was badly damaged. The 97th fleet charged through the middle of the brute fleet, losing another two frigates and five colony ships, to reach the jump point.

They left at exactly 4:21:05 AM on November 3rd, 2552. The fleet is in-fact a portion of the UNSC homefleet, repurposed for recolonisation. There were nearly 100'000 people crammed onto each colony ship, and each UNSC ship was filled to maximum capacity.

Several months after the 97th Fleet Left earth to restart the colonisation program, the ONI prowler attached to the fleet, UNSC Out Of Sight, returned to earth to find that the war was over and that more colony ships will arrive shortly to the newest colony.
