The Office of Naval Intelligence Black Operations Group (formally known as the UNSC Military Intelligence Division Black Operations Group, better known as the Black Operations Group, and acronymed as BlackOpGru or BOG), was a subordinate branch of Section Three of the Office of Naval Intelligence, responsible for Black Operations. It was headed by Captain Aaron Gibson until his death in 2550.

It was the hands-on-wet counterpart of the Covert Operations Group led by Rear Admiral Ned Rich.

History[]

The Black Operations Group has been active since the founding days of the Office of Naval Intelligence along with its sister unit, the Covert Operations Group. It has carried out a massive amount of black operations since then, helping build up ONI's renown in the covert community for their effectiveness in special operations, but also for their ruthlessness in how they carried out these missions.

Though it was initially only deployed against other humans - primarily insurgence or terrorist movements - it would also be forced to fight the Covenant with the outbreak of The Great War. The group's inability to produce results comparable to those of the SPARTAN-II Commandos became a source of jealousy directed towards Doctor Catherine Halsey, the creator of the SPARTAN-II Program, for the group's commander at the time, Aaron Gibson, and would influence the latter's decision to approve the SPARTAN-III Program, the brainchild of Colonel James Ackerson.

Subordinate Units[]

  • Black Team - Made up of four SPARTAN-II supersoldiers, Black Team quickly earned a reputation as the BOG's most valuable assets, completing numerous high-risk top-priority missions on behalf of the UNSC.
