"They might be smaller than the King- and Mountaineer-class, but they're a heck of a lot cheaper, too."
―Anonymous UNSC serviceman

The Buckeye-class Light Cruiser is a class of capital ship of the UNSC Navy. It was a relatively small cruiser but held its power in numbers. It often led small numbers of light warships into battles. The Buckeye itself also acted as an escort in other sorts of engagements.

Reyes-McLees ReturnsEdit

During the Human-Covenant War, the legendary shipbuilding company, Reyes-McLees, was literally shut down when the Covenant attacked Mars and destroyed their primary super-shipyard in orbit, setting them back by billions of dollars. Because of this, the up-and-coming company, NaTech Industries, filled the role as the only contributor of large warships to the UNSC Navy for over twenty years. In order to bring back the renowned Reyes-McLees, the UNSC granted the company a 200,000,000,000 cR loan to rebuild most of their shipyard, and construction on it began in 2569 and completed in 2574, and at this time it began producing NaTech ships under liciense to create an income. In 2570, R-M began developing new designs of warship using captured Covenant technology and new Human technology until they could build ships. Their first ship, the Io-class Gunboat, was put into production in 2573. It was a simple design excellent for patrols and garrison of Second Rim colonies, where rebels and pirates constantly harassed miners and civilians.

In 2579, Reyes-McLees started development on what be their largest ship they've built since the Marathon-class. Over 200 scientists were brought to the research center on Mars for the development of the new ship's technologies. At the same time, twenty-five architects were ordered to began piecing together the ship in 2580. The development team generated nine different designs before coming up with their prototype, codenamed ROPE LADDER. It went through extensive testing over the next three months to test every single aspect of it. It was obviously better than the ships of the Great War, but it fell short of NaTech's quality, which surprised many. The design, instead of being tossed out, was kept and improved. For eight months, the team continued work on ROPE LADDER. When the final design rolled out, the UNSC ordered for one model to be built for testing. Once constructed, the ship once again went through months of extensively harsh testing until the ship was literally about to fall apart. The design was accepted and put onto construction lines. It was named the Buckeye-class Light Cruiser after the buckeye tree, which is native to Earth.
