UNSC Special Forces infantry practice special purpose infiltration / extraction (SPIE) from a DO-30 Kingfisher during the Galactic Era.

The DO-30 Kingfisher, formally known as the Dropship Model 30 Kingfisher (Observation), is a small, turbine-rotor helicopter operated by the UNSC Special Operations Command and the UNSC Army Special Operations Aviation during the Galactic Era. It was introduced at the dawn of the 27th century into the UNSC's arsenal of military hardware, seeing significant use in UNSC military campaigns such as the Dashan Campaign.

The Kingfisher was designed to fulfill small-unit air assault, reconnaissance, and observational roles in military special operations aviation (SOA). responsibilities. The OH-30 was a highly versatile airframe with hardpoints and a modular superstructure that spawned a number of specialized variants to adapt to an evolving battlespace; a number of variants were in active usage by UNSC Army Special Operations Aviation.

Its armament is typically light but is extremely flexible, configurable for specialized mission requirements. Typical armaments include light-caliber chain-guns as well as modular rocket pods.

[edit] Behind the Scenes

  • The DO-30 Kingfisher is named after the real-world Kingfisher (family Alcedines), a suborder of small and brightly-colored birds.
  • General concepts for the OH-30 were developed from the real-world U.S. Army MH-6 Little Bird and the OH-58 Kiowa.
  • The Kingfisher article is heavily based on the OH-30 Kingfisher article on Gears of War Fan Fiction Wikia, also written by writer RelentlessRecusant.
