The F506 Piranha-class interceptor was a dedicated fleet interceptor operated by the UNSC Navy prior to and during the Galactic Era. Although its exact maximum velocity was classified, the Piranha-class was popularly believed to be the fastest and most maneuverable starfighter at the time of its construction, and for several decades, would be the main line interceptor of the UNSC.

[edit] Specifications
At the time of its construction, the Piranha-class interceptor held two infamous honors; to be the fastest and the smallest UNSC starfighter constructed to date, posing significant engineering quandaries in its construction and also challenging UNSC naval doctrine on its deployment and roles in the UNSC's starfighter corps. At 10.2 meters in length, it is the smallest UNSC fighter constructed, a fraction of the size of the 64-meter-long C709 Longsword-class fighter employed in the Human-Covenant War.
The Piranha-class is lightly armed; for its primary armament, it carries two Mod. 2 Missile Launch Tubes equipped with a total of eight AIM-416 Streaker-class fighter-to-fighter missiles for engagement of hostile starfighters. It is also armed with a secondary Mk. 11 Starfire-class Mass Driver for extremely close-range fighter engagements.
The sole focus of the fleet interceptor is its remarkable speed and manueverability; it is lightly armed and lightly armored to give it as little mass as possible and to devote onboard space for a high-powered Deuterium/Tritium (2H/3H) fusion reactor, the power plant that fuels the vessel. While of limited endurance, its reckless speed can outpace any UNSC or Covenant starfighter; it was the first UNSC fighter to be faster than its Covenant counterpart. Its outstanding speed and handling characteristics are extremely challenging to handle — the Piranha-class requires extensive conditioning to pilot properly. However, when utilized correctly, the fleet interceptor is nimble and unchallenged, capable of easily evading enemy missile or beam fire, and outmanuevering hostile fighters to achieve target lock.
The Piranha-class fleet interceptors would be employed as dedicated interceptors in larger fleet engagements, aggressively attacking enemy fighter formations, screening friendly capital vessels, and escorting B82 Tigershark-class bombers. In other contexts, the interceptors were used as light scout fighters as well as combat air patrols (CAP) for civilian convoys or military formations.
[edit] Behind the Scenes
- The F506 Piranha-class interceptor derives its numerical designation from "FK506", the alternatve name of Tacrolimus, an well-known mTOR inhibitor employed as an immunosuppressant.
