Han was a young boy born shortly after the end of the Human-Covenant War. The son of two SPARTAN-IIIs, he was orphaned at an early age when his parents were killed in the line of duty. He fled military custody a few years later and made his way to the edges of human space in the hopes of finding his parents' killer. Captured by the Insurrectionist commander Redmond Venter, he was trained as a Bloodhound and molded into one of Venter's personal agents. He was partnered with a rebel agent named Ragna Aasen who later adopted him as her brother.

- When Han was born and his father, Shaiming-G231, selected his name, his mother, Raniya-G135, assumed the choice was a reflection of his Chinese heritage. However, Shaiming's choice was actually influenced by his fascination with an ancient Earth-based entertainment franchise.
