[edit] Millennium Era

[edit] 20th Century

The 20th century opened with Europe at an apex of wealth and power, and with much of the world under its direct colonial control or its indirect domination. Much of the rest of the world was influenced by heavily Europeanized nations: the United States and Japan. As the century unfolded, however, the global system dominated by rival powers was subjected to severe strains, and ultimately yielded to a more fluid structure of independent nations organized on Western models.

This transformation was catalysed by wars of unparalleled scope and devastation. World War I destroyed many of Europe's empires and monarchies, and weakened France and Britain. In its aftermath, powerful ideologies arose. The Russian Revolution of 1917 created the first communist state, while the 1920s and 1930s saw militaristic fascist dictatorships gain control in Italy, Germany, Spain, Japan and elsewhere.

Ongoing national rivalries, exacerbated by the economic turmoil of the Great Depression, helped precipitate World War II. The militaristic dictatorships of Europe and Japan pursued an ultimately doomed course of imperialist expansionism. Their defeat opened the way for the advance of communism into Central Europe, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Romania, Albania, China, North Vietnam and North Korea.

Following World War II, in 1945, the United Nations was founded in the hope of allaying conflicts among nations and preventing future wars. The war had, however, left two nations, the United States and the Soviet Union, with principal power to guide international affairs. Each was suspicious of the other and feared a global spread of the others political-economic model. This led to the Cold War, a forty-year stand-off between the United States, the Soviet Union, and their respective allies. With the development of nuclear weapons and the subsequent arms race, all of humanity were put at risk of nuclear war between the two superpowers. Such war being viewed as impractical, proxy wars were instead waged, at the expense of non-nuclear-armed Third World countries.

The Cold War lasted through the ninth decade of the twentieth century, when the Soviet Union's communist system began to collapse, unable to compete economically with the United States and western Europe; the Soviets' Central European "satellites" reasserted their national sovereignty, and in 1991 the Soviet Union itself disintegrated. This left the United States for the time being as the "sole remaining superpower," a status whose permanence came into question as that country's economic supremacy began to show signs of slippage.

In the early postwar decades, the African and Asian colonies of the Belgian, British, Dutch, French and other west European empires won their formal independence but faced challenges in the form of neocolonialism, poverty, illiteracy and endemic tropical diseases. Many of the Western and Central European nations gradually formed a political and economic community, the European Union, which subsequently expanded eastward to include former Soviet satellites.

[edit] 21st Century

The twentieth century saw exponential progress in science and technology, and increased life expectancy and standard of living for much of humanity. As the developed world shifted from a coal-based to a petroleum-based economy, new transport technologies, along with the dawn of the Information Age, led to increased globalization. Space exploration reached throughout the solar system. The structure of DNA, the very template of life, was discovered, and the human genome was sequenced, a major milestone in the understanding of human biology and the treatment of disease. Global literacy rates continued to rise, and the percentage of the world's labour pool needed to produce humankind's food supply continued to drop.

The century saw the development of new global threats, such as nuclear proliferation, epidemics of contagious diseases, environmental problems such as the greenhouse effect and deforestation, and the dwindling of global resources. It witnessed, as well, a dawning awareness of ancient hazards that had probably previously caused mass extinctions of lifeforms on the planet, such as near-earth asteroids and comets, supervolcano eruptions, and gamma-ray bursts. Meanwhile the life courses of many states continued to be accompanied by wars, with resulting loss of life, economic devastation, disease, famine and genocide. As of 2008, some 30 ongoing armed conflicts raged in various parts of the world.

As the 20th century yielded to the 21st, it became increasingly clear that Earth's human population was fast becoming lodged in a historic bottleneck of resource constraints, exacerbated by mounting population and growing environmental degradation. A matter of particular urgency was the development of more plentiful and safer sources of energy such as renewable energy varieties, and perhaps expanded use of nuclear energy and of "clean" fossil-fuel technologies.

[edit] World War III

The spark of the Third World War.
"Their script is now written, subject only to last-minute editing and stage-directions. The stage itself, albeit in darkness, is almost ready. Down in the pit, the subterranean orchestra is already tuning up. The last-minute, walk-on parts are even now being filled. Most of the main actors, one suspects, have already taken up their roles. Soon it will be time for them to come on stage, ready for the curtain to rise. The time for action will have come."
―Peter Lemesurier, author of The Armageddon Script

World War III started on June 8th, 2013. The events supporting or assisting to the existence of World War III (the so-called never-to-be-achieved) are as so:

  • An attack on Iraq, Iran and/or Syria as being the trigger to set the entire Middle East into fiery conflagration.
  • Once America is firmly entrenched into the Middle East with the majority of her first-line units, North Korea is to attack South Korea.
  • With America's forces stretched well beyond the limit, China is to invade Taiwan. This ushered the start of World War Three.

Due to the the dramatic increase of divorce undermined the institution of the family, the society faced considerable population diversity along with disunity between races. Majority contradictions and uprisings between tradition and religion marked the rise of a rebellious anarchy. People lost their faith, both religiously and in their government.

The imposition of higher taxes undermined the economic stability and vitality of the World power. Taxes were raised to pay for deficit governments spending, to pay for food for all in society and to pay for government-sponsored activities of diversion, such as circuses and sports. Interestingly, as the time of the final collapse drew closer, greater emphasis was placed on sports, to divert the attention of the public from the distressing news of massive trouble within the World Nations. Hidden conspirators were working within the government to secretly destroy it. They worked quietly, invisibly and deceitfully; during the entire time they were secretly dismantling the United Nations, they publicly proclaimed their unswerving support of it.

Japan was also involved in the war but in a background status, and never committed SDF forces to actual combat. Some evidence points that the war occurred in Eurasia. Nuclear exchanges occurred in the Asian sphere. The process of removing radiation was referred to as the Japanese Miracle. The only known casualty of this limited exchange was Tokyo Prefecture, which was destroyed to the extent that the majority of it sunk below sea level. To this day, the deconstruction of the site continues. The arrival of the Japanese Miracle is said to have contributed to the American’s Empire waning power in this decade, due to the fact that nuclear weapons lost part of the their deterrent, the side-effect of nuclear fallout.

The American Empire, Russo-American Alliance (the Ameri-Soviet Union), and the United States of America.

After the end of the nuclear World War III, the United States is partitioned into three countries: the American Empire, the Russo-American Alliance (the Ameri-Soviet Union), and the United States of America. The American Empire seems driven by a desire to restore its diminished power and prestige, towards which end it adopts a policy of militarist aggression and open imperialism, directed primarily against Latin America. The borders of the U.S. successor states seem to hew closely to existing state borders; it appears that the AE contains 19 states, the rump United States 10, and the Russo-American Alliance 21.

Due to its battered post-war economy and weakened political position, the American Empire enters into a security pact with Japan, which had escaped World War III largely unscathed. The pact reaffirms Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution, prohibiting Japan both from deploying its military overseas and possessing nuclear weapons. One of the major reasons the American Empire seeks to enter into this treaty is its desire to co-opt the "Japanese Miracle," radiation-scrubber nanomachines which can negate the effects of nuclear fallout. This makes nuclear weaponry somewhat less devastating, since the radioactive particulates created by an atomic event can be safely dealt with, reducing the weapons' deterrence potential.

In 2020, the American Empire calls for the deployment of UN troops to South America, under the pretext of removing the corrupt, narco-trafficking governments of Mexico and several other Latin American countries. Countries which cooperate in the AE project by contributing troops to the UN force include Britain and Japan, while leftist guerrillas and foreign volunteers are among those who take up arms against the invaders. The ultimate outcome of the war is not given; it is known to have involved heavy urban warfare, the carpet bombing of cities, and the commission of major war crimes. The fighter and revolutionary leader Marcelo Jarti of the Republic of Jenoma is also mentioned to have been the target of several AE and British assassination attempts, possibly in connection with these events or their aftermath.

In 2024, a civil war breaks out on the Korean Peninsula, leading to an American Empire call for another UN intervention to stabilize the situation. In reality, the Empire hopes to take control of Korean natural resources, which they promise to share with Japan in exchange for the latter's deployment of the JSDA in a support role. This war results in the apparent destruction of the North Korean regime, though it is not revealed what replaces it, and a massive exodus of refugees..

The American Empire does not appear to have much influence outside of the North and South American continents, and its relationship with the European Union is largely unknown, though it is able to successfully appeal to Britain for military assistance in Latin America c. 2020. Outside of Japan, the American Empire appears to have very little influence in East Asia, although they do maintain extensive surveillance capabilities in the region, including satellites capable of monitoring all phone conversations in Japan. It is never mentioned whether the AE still controls the Korean peninsula, or what influence, if any, the AE may retain in the Middle East, Africa, and Australia. A Canadian Civil War is mentioned as having taken place in the decade preceding 2030; any AE involvement is unknown.

[edit] Jovian Moon Campaign

The Jovian Moons Campaign marked the start of the Interplanetary War and also sparked numerous campaigns across the Human worlds. The Campaign began due to Jovian secessionist attacks on UN Colonial Advisors on the moon Io. This led to three months of fighting between the United Nations and Jovian "Frieden" forces. The campaign was easily considered as one of the bloodiest and the spark of increased friction and militarization that followed.

The Jovian Moons Campaign escalated tensions, as Earths National Governments - many of which sponsored colonies within the system-began fighting proxy wars off-planet. As these proxy wars continued, tensions on Earth mounted, leading to a number of armed conflicts on Earth itself, such as The Rain Forest Wars and its neighbouring planet, Mars where the Martian Campaign took place.

[edit] Interplanetary War

The Interplanetary War occurred between the United Nations, Koslovics, Friedens and a number of other National Governments. Several new political movements were formed and initiated, such as the Koslovics and the Jovian Frieden movement (which attacked the United Nations Colonial advisers on Io, one of the moons of Jupiter), and UN-sponsored military forces begin a pattern of massive build-ups which culminated in the Interplanetary War.

[edit] Human-Covenant War

Main article: Human-Covenant War

The Human-Covenant War, also known as The Great War, was a major interstellar conflict pitting the United Earth Government and its United Nations Space Command against the Covenant empire during the mid-26th century between October 7, 2525 and March 3, 2553. There were two additional factions of the conflict; The Flood and a small number of surviving Forerunner constructs. Both additional factions proved to be invaluable to the efforts of humanity, as the information taken from Forerunner constructs and the Flood invasion of High Charity were helpful in splitting the Covenant apart in the October of 2552.

The war was instigated by the Covenant, whose Prophets discovered that humans were directly related to the Forerunners. In order to keep the Covenant intact, war was declared against humanity. Over the next few decades, the Covenant, with superior firepower, numbers and technology, overpowered humanity on hundreds of worlds, including heavily defended strongholds such as Reach. The Humans would only win scattered and costly victories.

The conflict was closely connected with, and the cause of, the Covenant Civil War, both of which resulted in the final defeat of the Covenant Loyalists and Flood. The official cessation of hostilities occurred on March 3, 2553. The war was incredibly costly to both sides, with billions of humans and likely hundreds of millions of Covenant killed during the hostilities and further heavy casualties during the Flood plague.
