The Kig-Yar Union is a Union between 3 main clans and 9 lesser clans that united and separated from the Kig-Yar Pirates, since they didn't want to wage war against the USR. They inhabit the Kig-Yar homeworld, Eayn, along with its neighbouring planets and two nearby systems.

[edit] History
[edit] Creation
When the Covenant Loyalists crumbled, the Kig-Yar broke away, finally free for the first time in centuries. Many of the commanding Kig-Yar Clans wanted to go back to their original way of Piracy, while the other Clans wanted to finally band together into an efficient state. Ulimately, the clans broke away from each other, and, with support from the USR, the reform-natured Kig-Yar forced the Pirates to the outskirts of space.
After that, the USR allowed the remaining 12 Clans along with spread Kig-Yar settlements to go together into a Union. But the Sangheili never truly trusted the Kig-Yar, and therefore, they are constantly patrolling the Kig-Yar Union's home system with Warships, in case they would attempt something.
It took nearly 2 years for the Union to fully develop, as some Kig-Yar didn't want to follow the Union's newly created government, the Kig-Yar Senate, and eventually rebelled. But the Senate managed to build the Kig-Yar's first truly efficient army, and they defeated the Rebels. Finally, in 2555, almost all Kig-Yar in the Y'Deio System and the two neighbouring systems were united, for the first time in the race's history.
[edit] Necros War
The Kig-Yar Union eventually joined the Alliance of United Races, primarily to get secure trading lines without having to worry about about losing their ships to pirates, but also because they hoped it would get them closer to destroy the Kig-Yar Pirates. They were still not trusted by the rest of the Alliance, however, and the USR had warships patrol the borders of the KYU-controlled systems. The only ones that truly acknowledged the KYU were the Machina from the Jastenon and Tarom Lineages, who helped the KYU to develop improved versions of their equipment, as well as provide assistance to the KYU to develop what would later become their military strategy.
Eventually, however, the KYU was trusted with a mission from the AUR; assault the Kig-Yar Pirate base The Black Abyss, eliminate the Pirates there fast and swiftly, and then wait for arriving Remnant and Pirate reinforcements, and destroy them as well.
[edit] Culture
Few Kig-Yar have a religion, though some peasants and workers believe in spirits in trees and rocks, along with the ancient Kig-yar gods. During the time of service in the Covenant, some Kig-Yar started to beleive in the Great Journey, though the majority did not. Several of these believers later adopted the Path to Ascension faith created by the Sangheili after the end of the Human-Covenant War.
During the early years of the original Kig-Yar States, there was no effective schooling system. Mostly the younglings had to learn from experience and from their parents all since they hatched. But, when the Kig-Yar Union was formed, a schooling system was planned, based a bit off both human and sangheili systems. Kig-Yar younglings start their studying at the age of 5, then go in school until they're 14, where they're forced to choose either a civilian or military career.
[edit] Clans
The KYU was created from a total of 12 clans (plus widespread settlements of peasants) and two thirds of the population is from one of these clans. However, "Clan" in Kig-Yar terms is not the same as it is for other species. Kig-Yar clans doesn't entirely consist of people from the same family, they can also consist of many random Kig-yar that are accepted into a clan (the clans have different trials for acception, although the rules do not apply to the clan's creating family and their relatives).
(Note:If a Kig-Yar from the KYU achieves a status of Shipmaster or higher, they receive an addition to their name, the word being the Kig-yar word for that rank. For example, a Ship Master gets to add "Chur'R" to the start of their names. This is a new naming system established by the Sangheili during the Kig-Yar's time in the Covenant, opposite to the naming used by the Kig-Yar Pirates, who went back to the old Kig-Yar naming scheme.).
The clans are:
[edit] Zan Clan
The Zan Clan is the generally most powerful clan in the KYU, and have always been since the Union's creation. It was the first clan that initiated negotiations about creating the first Kig-Yar Empire, which would later convince the 12 Union clans to band together and the Pirate Clans to leave their home systems. The Zan Clan also controls most of the Kig-Yar trading companies, and have the most seats in the Senate. Therefore, the current Grand Senator is from the Zan Clan, Dok'G-Lak.
[edit] Hag Clan
The Hag Clan was the second of the three primary clans that wanted to band together to form the Kig-yar Union. They control many trading companies that sell luxuries, like rare fruits or animals that other races can eat as delicacies, including Thorn Beasts, Mraks and Spike Apples. A notable member of the Hag Clan, Huk'M-Tum, is a member of the Senate.
[edit] Agm Clan
The Agm Clan was the third of the three primary clans that wanted to band together to form the Kig-yar Union. The clan is known for their warrior-like nature, and most of the best officers and soldiers are from the Agm Clan. A notable Agm Clan member is Narvak, a Kig-Yar Shocktrooper.
[edit] Minor Kig-Yar Clans
- Nik Clan
- Zat Clan
- Vhyr Clan
- Khok Clan
- Nhaw Clan
- Lor Clan
- Ugk Clan
- Poq Clan
- Vur Clan
[edit] Technology
The Kig-Yar Union use USR ships, weapons and vehicles, although they are forbidden by the USR to use more powerful pieces of technology, due to mistrust between the races.
The Kig-Yar only have one original piece of technology, the Kig-yar Point Defence Gauntlet. By 2589, it was upgraded, with much help from Machina scientists, to be able to resist plasma technology and grenades better, their former weaknesses. While they're still weak against these arsenals, the Shield can now take more of it before failing.
[edit] Military
The Kig-Yar Union military is based on three principles; speed, teamwork and ambush warfare. While using 'heavy' weapons, they often avoid it unless necessary. This new kind of strategy was planned out together with friendly Machina strategists. The Shocktroopers makes good use of their ability to climb and sneak in through most areas, and then surprise attack the enemy from behind.
The regular infantry usually move in Lance or Company-sized phalanxes (shield walls), sticking together to form a nearly impenetrable barrier of energy shields. Often the Lances consist of Soldiers from the same family or clan in order to increase unity.
To support the infantry, the Kig-Yar makes good use of Snipers and Sharpshooters. The Kig-Yar are known to be some of the galaxy's best snipers/sharpshooters.
The Kig-Yar Union Fleet also reflects on their speed-specialisation, utilizing primarily light warships like Frigates and Destroyers, while medium-sized Carriers and Cruisers serve as flagships, and even they are known to have been modified to go faster, removing portions of the hull or heavy weaponry to increase speed.
The Union's ranking structure is nearly the same as the one used in the Covenant, with a few minor changes. The ranks are (from lowest to highest):
- Minor - The Minors are the lowest rank, and the regular infantry of the Kig-Yar. They carry Blue Energy Shields and Plasma Pistols.
- Major - Majors are slightly higher than the Minors. They are also used as infantry. They carry orange Energy Shields and Plasma Rifles.
- Sharpshooter - Sharpshooters are the Marksmen of the Kig-Yar. They carry no Energy Shield. They use the Carbine with deadly efficiency, and carries a Plasma Pistol in reserve.
- Sniper - Snipers are, as the rank implies, Snipers. They can also be used for recon and scouting purposes, whenever scouts are unavailable. They carry no Energy Shield, like Sharpshooters. They use Beam Rifles, and like Sharpshooters, carries a Plasma Pistol in reserve.
- Heavy - Heavies are Kig-Yar wielding the Jackal Shot, the closest thing they have to a heavy weapon, or piloting vehicles and turrets. Heavies have a turquoise-colored stationary variant of the Point Defence Barrier (which allows them to hold their weapon with two hands, while still having protection), and also wear a heavier harness.
- Ranger - Rangers are Kig-yar equipped with jet packs and, if required, vacuum-proof suits. They do not use defence gauntlets, but rather wield Carbines or Needlers and throw Plasma Grenades.
- Scout - Scouts are the KYU's reconnaissance group, gathering intel on enemy formations and mark targets for the main force. They are lightly equipped, with no defence gauntlet. Instead, they are given active camoflage generators, various reconnaissance and scouting tools, and a light weapon such as a Plasma pistol.
- Shocktrooper - Shocktroopers are the Kig-Yar equivalent to commandos, and are given tasks such as wiping out enemy formations ahead of the main force or performing guerilla operations. They can also support regular infantry units to deal extra damage. Most uses the Carbine, but some uses the Needler Shotgun. They also carry Active Camoflage for stealth purposes, but have no defence gauntlet.
- Stormtrooper - Stormtroopers is another branch of the Kig-Yar Special Operations. Stormtroopers use a Kig-Yar variant of the Orbital Insertion Pod to drop swiftly to the surface and secure landing zones. They use carbines or needler shotguns and wields a purple point defence gauntlet.
- Butcher - Butchers are experts of stealth, and are cold-blooded killers. They kill key enemy commanders to tip the tide of battles, preferably without anyone knowing who did it. To aid in their purpose, they are proficient with the Beam Rifle and uses active camoflage.
- Bodyguard - Bodyguards are elite soldiers ensuring the safety of Kig-Yar field commanders. They wield gray energy shields and Carbines or Plasma Rifles.
- Ultra - Ultras are equivalents to UNSC Lieutenants, and commands larger groups of Kig-Yar phalanxes into battle. They carry Red Energy Shields and Needlers or Needler Shotguns.
- Zealot - Zealots are the equivalent to Sangheili Field Masters. Zealots commands large Kig-Yar units into battle. They carry Green Energy Shields and Plasma Assaulters.
- Shipmaster - Shipmasters controls whole ships. They use a Plasma Pistol in combat.
- Fleet Master - Fleet Masters controls fleets of warships. If they engage in combat, they use a Plasma Pistol.
To keep up their treaty with the United Sangheili Republic, the KYU was forced to recruit several contingents of soldiers and station them on USR colonies. Even when stationed on these places, the soldiers were often divided into small detachments and spread over large areas to prevent them from being any threat. They would mostly serve as scouts and snipers. While not trusted by the USR, they were still given Energy Shields installed to their armor to make them more effective.
