"Fucking rabbits. Everywhere we go, some stupid faggot has introduced them and no matter how hostile the alien critters, bunnies survive. Stupid lil' bastards like to snuggle up where the earth is warmest, usually on top of a landmine where it has warmed the soil above it. They won't set off a tank mine, not nearly heavy enough, but they will set off the APERS. Then its bunny heaven. Means at first glance, you can tell where anti tank mines are cos of the bunny droppings."
―Lance Corporal Lucy Shepard

The M121 Bounding Anti-Personnel Mine is a UNSC anti personnel mine.

Description[]

The M121 APERS is a mine designed to be buried, though can be operated free standing, and buried either by infantry, artillery, orbital or aerial disruption. The Mine lies under the ground, maintaining a passive motion detector, awaiting enemy movement. Once the sensor is triggered, the mine quickly generates a SONAR pulse, analyses the result and cross references it with known targets. After this it delivers a brief IFF scan, to double confirm it is not a friendly combatant by the IFF signature. Once a hostile combatant is confirmed it bounds up, propelled by propelling charge from its 'cup', the hardened polymer basket in which it rests while simultaneously launching its side charge to send it into a controlled spin. Once the optical sensor has a confirmed lock, it launches a cone shaped explosion, sending out a hail of EXCALIBUR fragments that cut through most shielding types and body armour, usually killing even fully armoured Brute Minors in a single explosion. The mine also possess a rudimentary pressure sensitive proximity sensor, which after activated the mine conducts a IFF interrogation then if unsuccessful two seconds after pressure is released, it bounds and activates. The mine also posses anti-tampering systems to protect it from being disarmed by enemy EOD forces with ease, including a simple spring that activates when it's electromagnetic signal is disrupted. It can also be augmented with wide dispersal pressure panels and dummy mines.

Like all UNSC Mines it can be set to have a life span, after which it explodes and it can be deactivated and reactivated by coded signals. These signals are composed on near unbreakable codes, preventing the enemy from randomly bombarding the battlefield with codes to deactivate them. The Mine is invisible to conventional mine detectors and invisible to ARGUS sensors.

UNSC Remarks[]

"The Necros learned the trick with rabbits and our mines so we started sprinkling the APERS mines with rabbit shit before we activated them."
