The M1 Amphibious Reconnaissance Drone is a robotic land and aquatic vehicle designed to move as fast over land and under the sea as possible.
The M1 is equipped with anti-gravity pods powered by the on-board hydrogen that it uses to hover above the ground. Propulsion jets are used to propel the drone rapidly around.
One of the most interesting aspects of the Reconnaissance Drone is that it is constructed out of a variable density polymer. When it comes in contact with water the material shrinks and becomes denser, causing the drone to sink to the bottom. However, if the drone wishes to remain afloat, it activates an electromagnetic field that prevents the material from becoming dense enough to sink.
The M1 is only lightly armed with one .50 Cal automated turret that has a maximum range of 500 meters.
There are three series of M1 drones, each one with a different power source.
The standard M1 Amphibious Reconnaissance Drone is equipped with a hydrogen engine, providing cheap, efficient energy for a long duration.
M1(R) drones on planets held and fortified by the UNSC are equipped with wireless power modules, enabling the fusion reactors in the bases to power the drone remotely, thus reducing weight and increasing its speed.
An experimental line of M1's equipped with fusion reactors were field tested. They proved to be lighter and more efficient than the other two series, but were as then too expensive for mass production.
