"Who called for a battle taxi?"
―Anonymous UNSC Army driver

The M561 Springbok Armoured Personnel Carrier is a UNSC tracked armoured vehicle. Developed as a replacement for the Bison, the Springbok would instead end up serving alongside it, as a “battle taxi” of the UNSCDF. The vehicle carries moderate armour, a defensive remote weapon weapon, and room for 11 passengers. Highly mobile, it is often used to ferry soldiers to the front, but is rarely used in frontline operations themselves, leaving this to more heavily armoured and better armed vehicles. In a push, it can serve on the frontline, allowing infantry to assault positions from the safety of an armoured hull. Sharing the same chassis and a 70% commonality of parts with the M478 Oryx Mechanized Infantry Combat Vehicle, it often operates closely with it.

The Springbok is arranged much like the Oryx, with a wedge shaped shell, with a driver and gunner up front, each with their own hatches. At the front of the vehicle is a PALADIN Weapon Station, most commonly fitted with a M247H2 Heavy Machine Gun. The rear of the vehicle has a door for passengers to disembark, as well as two roof hatches. Internally, the passengers have access to the battlenet via holographic system displays. The whole vehicle also has CBRN protective measures. The vehicle uses a hydrogen ICE common to the chassis, with the means to extend operational range.

The Springbok is a fast and agile tracked vehicle, great and navigating difficult terrain, and maintaining speed with armoured formations. While not ideal for frontline combat, its protection and agility is most effective in its 'battle taxi' role.
