"We were on the retreat from the Brutes when they turned up. I thought they were some kind of knight when the appeared. Point fifty cal rounds fucked those bastards up!"
—Anonymous Marine

The M84 wolf All Terrain Armoured Assault Suit came from the same line of research as it's bigger brother, the M13 Dragon MAW. It was a highly mobile Exo Skeleton designed for urban operations. With its highly powerful legs and light frame, it became a popular support unit during the Inner Colony Liberations.

[edit] Development

With the success of the M13 Dragon MAW/X a lighter, more mobile suits were tested, resulting in the Wolf. Whereas the M13 is designed for support of urban operations on a larger scale, the M84 was for direct support, being just small enough to enter larger buildings and aptly engage and destroy targets in there. The interface was a simple design, with the user slotting his hands into a pair of molded arms in the abdomen of the suit and could manipulate the larger arms. Though capable of handling most small arms, they were usually given the MB67 OICW, a heavy duty assault rifle firing .50 rounds and armed with a under slung 102mm missile launcher or four six guage flechette shells in a magazine. Capable of going toe to toe with Brute fighters, including captains and even Chieftains, it was rightly feared by Brute forces. The original design used a armoured suit with composite armour of boron carbide, titanium alluminide, plastic laminates, kinetic energy absorbing layers and heat resistant kevlar with a polymer lattice resin for strong bonding. This is further augumented by ablative resin coating. The vehicle featured a fixed 'head' with a HUD for a soldier to look out and spot targets.

It largely saw use at the end of 2552, with forward squads operating in urban enviroments being armed with at least one or two per unit. Some where also put into their own assault forces, with four being deployed from Pelicans into combat, their highly advance legs capable of high drops.

[edit] Dire Wolf

Towards 2605 when rearmament began the old Wolfs were brought in for an upgrade. Firstly, aesthetically, it was enlargened, rivalling the Dragon in size. Now the pilot could be held in a self sufficient pod inside it with access to a variety of HUD systems. The pilot was augmented by a TADS/PNVS system slaved into their neural implant. This TADS came in the form of a 'head' that was fitted with a variety of systems and moved with the head of the pilot. It was fitted with new, high powered fusion cores popular amongst vehicles, personal armour and ships, it now gave the option to epxand its suite of equipment. It could be armed with a heavily modified G/J-PACK or G-PACK, enabling it the same level of manouvrability as marines armed with them. A shield generator, though under powered for the size of the vehicle, it was used nonetheless, providing the already tough exo skeleton a even heftier boost. This model was named the M85B Dire Wolf ATAAS, after the massive prehistoric canine. Structurally it was given thicker armour as well. The head now contained an array of targetting systems, including Night vision, thermal imaging, telescopic sight and infrared. Also attached where so called 'bunny ears'. Two stalk like attachments on the shoudlers than flipped around corners. The camera on the tip provided a view around the corner. It was also capable of interfacing with the majority of weapons availible in the UNSC arsenal.

[edit] Alpha Wolf

The Alpha Wolf was the third version of the Wolf, being designed for special operation teams and commanding officers of Armoured Suits/Walker brigades. The suitwas further up armoured with titanium alluminide, greatly increasing its protection, as well as highly advance shock absorbers, allowing it to take greater amounts of punishment. It was further augmented by more powerful motion systems to keep driving the unit moving at similar speeds to the Dire Wolf. The 'head' suite was expanded with a range of information equipment and a millimeter wave RADAR. The system was further augmented with a pair of 'reflex' cannons on the back of its shoulders. These three barreled rotary cannons were fed of a magazine of 9, 20mm shells. These allowed the operator to make 'reflex' attacks when being flanked, stopping them from being as vulnerable. Finally a more expensive, powerful fusion core was added, allowing longer operational times and more powerful shielding.

[edit] M84D Jackal All Terrain Stealth Assault Suit

The M84D Jackal ATSAS is a modified Alpha Wolf which keeps many of the systems found on previous model but. most importantly, holds a microproccessor directed fibre optic dynamic liquid display active camoflauge system, ran off the internal power supply, reducing the vehicles operational range and time or ran off external, option armoured fusion packs. This model was designed for specialist commandos and Spec Op teams. It was redesigned to have a more RADAR resistant shape, thermal and EM masking systems, RADAR countermeasure systems such as RADAR cancellation systems, jam homing, texture buffers, stealth ablative coating and active countermeasures such as Chaff Launchers.

[edit] UNSC Remarks

"Who the hell called it a wolf?! It looks nothing like a wolf?!"

"I suppose they named it the Wolf because its a pack hunter, drives it prey out and eliminates it as a team."

"I saw a Chieftain get Charlie Foxtroted by one back on Necropolis, the stupid bastard didn;t activate his shield booster and got blasted to pieces by its shooter."

"During the battle to take Jackson Harbour i saw some pshyco fucker in one of them firing two M41 rocket launchers at once! One in each hand!"

"The thing is beautiful to pilot, with all motions being fluid responses. Using your legs to kick crap can require some retraining but its well worth it, Mines been tagged by a spike grenade, shot by a Bravo Sierra and hit by one of those Gravity Hammers. It hasn't failed me yet."

"At Victory we jumped from out Frigates in low orbit, surprised the fuck outta the Charlie Foxtrots down there. Over our twenty strong squadron only two were damamged on landing, one cos he hit a building, and another cos he hit a Charlie tank."

"I saw two of those 'Alpha Wolfs' supporting Commandos at Linna. These babies were dishing out .50 cal rounds and 20mm shells like they were nuthin, blowing up bee-otches left and right."
