The MA12 Carbine was a shortened assault rifle intended for close-range to mid-range combat usage, fielded by multiple services of the UNSC Defense Force during the Galactic Era at the dawn of the 27th century.
Originally, the MA12 did not receive widespread deployment, its short effective small-arms range making it useful only as a secondary backup weapon for vehicle crews or stranded aviators and pilots attempting to evade capture.

However, the MA12 design rapidly became popular at UNSC Special Operations Command, and UNSC special warfare operators quickly became fond of the MA12, whose light weight and small profile made it an excellent close quarters combat (CQB) weapon and also a versatile weapon capable of engaging targets at multiple ranges in open field infantry combat. Eventually, UNSCSOCOM would place a special-acquisition order for a custom variant of the MA12, which it named the MA12 Special Operations Capable / Close Quarters Battle (SOC/CQB) Carbine, 5.56mm, often referred to colloquially as the "A12 Carbine". The A12 would be well-received, with the Myrmidons and the UNSC Army Special Operations Group selecting the A12 as one of their default weapons.
The popular "A12" would soon rise above a Special Forces-only custom variant, with various armament manufacturers instead mass-producing the MA12-SOC/CQB as an entire product line. The A12 would become a favorite of civilian military enthusiasts at shooting ranges and also civilian militias.
