The MG132 Machine Gun was a general-purpose machine gun (GPMG) series employed by the UNSC Army and the UNSC Marine Corps during the Galactic Era, at the dawn of the 27th century.
The original MG132 General-Purpose Machine Gun, 7.62mm was a fully-automatic machine gun with a high rate of fire, utilizing the heavy 7.62x51mm cartridge, designed to provide a high volume of devastating fire. However, it was extremely heavy and cumbersome, and standard operating procedure (SOP) called for a crew of three to operate the GPMG, a dedicated gunner, a dedicated loader, and a dedicated fire-team commander that was responsible for directing the machine gun's fire. The MG132, in standard Army or Marine doctrine, was a platoon-level asset, with most infantry platoons having at least one MG132 machine-gun attached. The MG132 team was responsible for providing support fires and to provide suppressive fire for fire maneuvering for the platoon. Both the MG132 gunner and loader were specialists specifically trained on the MG132.
As "regular" Army and Marine infantry troops would become drawn into counterinsurgency actions, it soon became clear that machine-guns would become a preferred weapon to defend small UNSC outposts, such as vehicle checkpoints and bunkers. A heavier variant, the MG132E Medium Machine Gun, 7.62mm, would be manufactured, with the "E" connoting "expanded", serving to describe the MG132E's new hydraulic buffer system to increase accuracy and stabilize during prolonged fire, a primitive cryogenic system to decrease the chances of overheat during extended fire, as well as an increased ammunition capacity per feed. The MG132E, because of its increased weight, was typically fired from a tripod from a stationary position, or else incorporated onto vehicles, such as the A404C Armored Personnel Carrier.
Later, another variant, the MG132L Light Machine Gun, 7.62mm, would be produced, a light machine gun (LMG) in contrast to its heavier predecessors. The MG132 would feature plastic parts and a shorter barrel and decreased accessories in order to reduce weight and increase maneuverability. The MG132 was a one-man machine gun that was fielded at the squad level, giving individual squads a high-capacity machine gun capability.
