MK ABLE was a highly-classified special access program operated by Section Three of the UNSC Office of Naval Intelligence under PATRIOT codeword classification. It was an advanced research program in theoretical physics and mathematics that conducted extensive research on metamaterials, with obvious military applications.

In its subordinate projects, MK ABLE investigated the usage of homogenous sub-micrometer-defined metamaterials to control the passage and refraction of electromagnetic (EM) radiation of the visible, microwave, and infrared spectra; to create a defined radius enclosed by a metamaterial cloak that refracted no incident radiation or showed any backscatter or shadow upon any radiation. This allowed for the generation of physical metamaterial cloaks capable of a mathematically-exacting radiation cloak of an object within the circumscribed radius of the cloak as well as a reflectionless interface.[1][2]

This novel next-generation passive camouflage technology by metamaterial design strategies has seen experimental field deployment by the UNSC Special Operations Command and the UNSC Office of Naval Intelligence. Engineering initiatives have investigated the readiness of a scalable, large-scale covert metamaterial engineering program that will allow for extensive field deployment of metamaterial cloak technology. Already, the B3 Specter, an unmanned multirole bomber, is one UNSC warfighting technology that utilizes the metamaterial concept.
