The Mjöllnir-class destroyer was a destroyer combatant hull classification operated by the UNSC Navy during the Galactic Era. Maneuverable and heavily-armed, the Mjöllnir-class destroyers dually fulfilled the roles of primary fleet assault vessel and naval escort.

[edit] Specifications

The Mjöllnir-class destroyer was the most modern UNSC destroyer as of the Galactic Era, comparable in size to the 478-meter-long UNSC Frigate and the 485-meter-long UNSC Destroyer, and approximately a third of the size of the Cyclops-class main battle cruiser.

In order to fulfill its role as the primary strike vessel in the UNSC fleet, the Mjöllnir-class is highly armed with two Mark IV Magnetic Accelerator Cannons, four Mk. 72 heavy ship-to-ship torpedo tubes, and fifty SSM-42 Crossbow-class Missile Pods; substantial armament to grant one of the highest armament-to-mass ratios of any vessel in the UNSC Navy. However, despite this significant weaponry, the destroyer is lightly armored—this is to represent minimal mass and to allow for maximal acceleration and velocity from the Mjöllnir-class destroyer's oversized thruster bank. The destroyer's speed, coupled with its firepower, acutely positions it to be a "hunter killer" that aggressively seeks out and destroys enemy cruisers.

The destroyer carries no onboard compliment of starfighters and drones, and is one of the only UNSC capital ships not to be equipped with fighter squadrons onboard.

[edit] Behind the Scenes

  • The Mjöllnir-class destroyers are named after Mjöllnir, the mythological hammer of Thor, the god of thunder in Norse mythology.
  • While author RelentlessRecusant was writing this article, fellow co-author Actene described the Mjöllnir-class destroyer as a "hunter-killer" vessel.
