The Oracle-class prowler was a stealth prowler-type classification operated by the UNSC Office of Naval Intelligence during Beyond Veil's Azure and the Galactic Era. A highly advanced permutation of existing UNSC stealth vessels, the Oracle-class incorporated progressive and substantiative iterations in UNSC stealth technology and reactor technology to produce a modernized reconnaissance vessel.

[edit] Specifications

At 125 meters in length, the Oracle-class prowler was even smaller than the diminutive Aegis-class frigate and less than a third of the size of the 478-meter-long UNSC Frigate of the Human-Covenant War.

The Oracle-class prowler was the contrivance of a decade-long investigation by UNSC Fleet Intelligence into the manufacture of an advanced stealth vessel exclusively utilizing modernistic technologies, many of which descended from MARBLE COURT, ONI's most recent concerted effort into the production of stealthed vessels. The external hull of the prowler is uniquely canted; extensive effort was placed into the crafting of the hull of the Oracle class, which outstandingly features no orthostatic planes, and additionally, features many planform and concave designs; collectively, these geometric optimizations result in a minimized radar cross-section (RCS). The Oracle-class prowler is said to have the smallest radar cross-section of any UNSC stealth ship designed to date, and its insubstantial radar return is geometrically angled away from the transmitter by nature of its topographic surface, limiting detection of the vessel by conventional means. Its hull is also made of dielectric materials, limiting its radiation refraction.

Furthermore, the prowler features a highly intricate cryogenics and radiation shielding endoskeleton underneath the hull that nullify its thermal signature, making it nearly undetectable against even the absolute zero of deep space, as well as blocking the emission of internal radiation away from the prowler, which would fatally compromise its stealth capability; this includes Cherenkov radiation, which is always emitted by all other UNSC warships upon reversion from Slipspace by nature of their fissile reactors—radiation shielding aboard the Oracle-class even cancels the distinctive Cherenkov reversion signature.

The Oracle-class incorporates a novel UNSC reactor design, the first of its kind to be installed on a spaceship—a sodium-cooled fast reactor, which is highly efficient compared to the deuterium (H2) reactors installed aboard most UNSC warships of the Galactic Era. The fast reactor design is capable of utilizing non-fissile materials, such as uranium-238 (Un238) because of the efficiency of its neutron capture design, allowing for powering of the prowlers with extremely low-grade and commonplace fuel, making them low-maintenance vessels to operate, in high contrast with other UNSC warships, which are resource-intensive to fuel. Furthermore, the high energy of the reaction allows for transmutation of potentially radioactive and compromising byproducts, preserving the prowler's stealth characteristics. The reactive core is cooled in liquid sodium (Na+).

The prowler is nearly unarmed, bearing only one Aegis-class free-electron laser system on a retractable turret. The free-electron laser is optimized for anti-missile roles in the highly unlikely event that the prowler is compromised and that inbound projectiles must be intercepted. However, UNSC Fleet Intelligence has also explored a new tactical dimension enabled by the installation of a free-electron laser aboard its vessels. The prowlers also have internal storage bays that can harbor thermonuclear mines or unmanned drones to supplement its sole weapons system.

[edit] History

The Oracle-class design was conceptualized in the end of the 2580s, emerging as a highly promising candidate for manufacture from UNSC Fleet Intelligence's concerted investigations. A limited production run was authorized by the Director of Naval Intelligence for a pilot test of the highly novel and futuristic design; this would be known as "Block 100" and would comprise a half-dozen vessels from the womb of the ONI Deep Space Naval Observatory.

The operational histories of the Block 100-type vessels were suggestive, although brief. Although Beyond Veil's Azure would consume substantial UNSC resources into the manufacture of line warships, the succeeding Galactic Era would see a resumed interest in the stealth vessels, and Block 200 and Block 300 production runs would be authorized as the Oracle-class prowlers proliferated in number, becoming classified but highly-efficient reconnaissance vessels in the employ of the UNSC Office of Naval Intelligence.

The Galactic Era and its character of low-intensity conflicts would see a widespread introduction of the Oracle-class vessels into UNSC military doctrine, and the reconnaissance and intelligence roles of the prowlers would be extensively employed in conflicts where war was won not by force but by prescience. Notably, Commander Karen Elizabeth Wakes of the UNSC Department of Strategic Intelligence would be deployed upon a prowler, the UNSC Meridian Dream, to Sanghelios.

[edit] Behind the Scenes

  • The Oracle-class prowler classification was named after the Oracles of Ancient Greece, who were prophesiers, paralleling the reconnaissance and intelligence roles of the prowlers.
  • The Stealth Reconnaissance Prowler ("SRP") hull classification symbol of the Oracle-class is identical to the abbreviation of the signal recognition particle ("SRP"), which is necessary for translocation of nascent proteins to the endoplasmic reticulum's lumen or membrane.
