While the UNSC possesses a large number of special warfare units, all with impressive combat records, the most notorious and publicly visible are the Orbital Drop Shock Troopers, the UNSC Marine Corps' elite special operations Division. Official policy is to classify all ODST operations as restricted, and personnel records to the civilian public are classified TOP SECRET, to protect individuals and their families from Insurrectionist reprisal. Unofficially, ODSTs wear their insignias with pride, and engender a mixture of fear and respect, even among the special forces community itself. Almost four hundred years old, with its origins rooted in the Interplanetary Wars that ravaged the solar system in the mid-22nd Century, the ODST Division has continued to serve as the most well-known face of UNSC Naval Special Warfare, and Special Warfare Command as a whole.
