"This job still amazes me with all the damned twists these missions take."
―SPARTAN-141 refering to a Rager XII mission brief.

SPARTAN-141, real name Cole Garrison, is one of the seven surviving Spartans in the UNSC Marine Corps' secret project to have SPARTAN-IIs of their own. He is one of the most secretive soldiers in the UNSC, but has no problem voicing his opinion when he needs to, even if the chain of command prevents him. Most of his and the other Marine Corps SPARTAN-IIs training was covered up and not much is known of his early life.

[edit] History

Cole-141 was born and raised on Thermopylae Colony, one of the UNSC's most difficult colonies to terraform, due to the unpredictable Ion storms that ravaged the planet. As a result, he and the colony's other inhabitants learned to be able to fend for themselves or die. His father, George, was killed soon after he was born by a coworker, who mistakenly believed that George was having an affair with his wife. When several Marines came to their homestead's door to kidnap 141 for the Project in 2520, his mother wounded one of them with an M6 sidearm, but was detained after they successfully took 141. She has not been seen since.

[edit] Project: MIST

Cole during Project: MIST training

Cole and the 49 other SPARTAN-II candidates passed up by Dr. Cathrine Halsey were found and kidnapped by the Marine Corps for Project: MIST. After a rather snoopy Marine Intelligence officer uncovered the UNSC Navy's SPARTAN-II and MJOLNIR projects and seeing early test results preform impressively, they wanted some Spartans of their own. Rounding up the candidates Halsey didn't use, due to budget limitations, the UNSC MC began work on their Spartans. Their training regimen was brutal, uncaring and broke down all of the candidates physically and emotionally. One of the reasons 141 and the other Spartans aren't called by their names at all is because the drill instructors told them that they no longer had names, that they must earn their Spartan number.

Because Halsey had 150 candidates, she couldn't take them all. The Marines didn't have that problem with only 50. However, they needed access to all the things Halsey's Spartans had, so several discreet "payments" and "mutual agreements" were made to get samples of the tech and supplies needed. Like Halsey's Spartans, many were killed or disfigured after the augmentation drugs were injected. Only 7 survived the process.

Graduating in 2530, their first assignment as Spartans was to eliminate Tim Kennedy, a known Rebel who had evaded the UNSC for 11 years. Even with the Covenant beginning to glass several of the Outer Colonies, Kennedy was a problem for the UNSC. After eliminating Kennedy, the Spartans were regulated to Black Ops, similar to Colonel Anderson. Successful in every mission they were sent into, they were eventually deployed to fight Covenant soldiers. Most of their original contact with the Covenant was during the Jericho VII Theater, when they were deployed alongside Master Chief and his Spartans.

[edit] Human-Covenant War

Cole, along with the rest of the 7 Spartans he grew up with in Project: MIST were sent into missions in dire need of intervention. Sometimes they were deployed alongside the Navy's SPARTAN-IIs, but maintained a safe distance away, lest their existence be revealed. However, during a battle on Spectre Prime, they were forced to cooperate with the other SPARTAN-IIs to eliminate what would have been an invading force in the Alpha Centauri system. After eliminating the entire force, their, along with the other SPARTAN-IIs, existence and several missions were released in 2547.

[edit] Operation: JUSTICE

After SPARTAN-126 was appointed leader of Black Team in 2549, the MIST Spartans were assigned to Reach, as test subjects for Project: MJOLNIR. When Reach was attacked by the Covenant, most of them were able to get away, but SPARTANs 126 and 141 were left behind. After meeting up with some marines, they escaped on a Longsword bomber. They soon learnt of an important diplomat coming to the Reach disaster site, named the Minor Prophet of Justice. They decided to eliminate the Prophet and hopefully weaken the Covenant caste system to the point of fracture. Most of the marines died when they boarded the Prophet's carrier, but the Spartan's successfully killed the Prophet. However, this only delayed what Justice had been relaying to the fleet: The Covenant had discovered Earth's location. The Spartans then used a Prowler from a damaged UNSC vessel to return to Earth.

[edit] The First and Second Battles of Earth

[edit] First Battle of Earth

After returning to Earth, SPARTANs 126 and 141 were extensively debriefed. John-117, Sgt. Johnson and several other SPARTAN-IIs arrived soon after in the Gettysburg. John and the rest of the Navy's SPARTAN-IIs were always considered more like cousins to Black Team than brothers ans sisters. They also didn't like the amount of publicity that John-117 got, just for doing what the rest of them did, day in, and day out.

However, they kept these feelings to themselves. They had just finished a friendly wrestling match with each other when John was called up to Cairo Station to receive his new MJOLNIR Mk. VI armor. Half an hour later, the Covenant found them. With their Mk. V armor in shops for maintenance, the combined SPARTANs were forced to improvise with ODST Body Suits. They did, however, eventually get MJOLNIR Mk. VI armor to use. After gearing up on the UNSC Open Season, they were sent down to the surface to hold back the invasion force. The rest of the Spartans had evacuated all civilians and were safely occupying Voi. However, several hours later they were recalled to Crow's Nest, an underground UNSC resistance base, when the Covenant began orbital bombardment of North America and occupying the planet.

[edit] Second Battle of Earth

141 fighting a Sangheili commando during the Battle of North America

SPARTANs 141, 126 and 013 were redeployed in what remained of North America, to quell the Covenant Loyalist forces looking for a "holy relic", which, after hearing considerable chatter from the Covenant battlenet, they believed was the Ark, some Forerunner device on Earth. The plan called for 126 and 013 to distract the majority of the Loyalists while 141 snuck on board their battleship and detonate a micro-nuke.

However, 141 was captured before he could detonate the nuke and was brought before a Brute Chieftan, to be executed. Meanwhile, SPARTANs 013 and 126 had successfully eliminated the forces on the ground, when they were told, by the Chieftan himself, that he would kill 141 if they attempted to rescue him. 013, disobeying a direct order from the higher ranking officer, 126, rammed a Phantom dropship into the battleship and created enough commotion to allow 141 to slip away, but 013 herself was caught and, as both UNSC and Covenant combatants watched on an unprecidented all-COM channel feed, was decapatated by the Chieftan.

SPARTAN-126, taking advantage of everyone's intent of their COM channels, immedatly detonated the micro-nuke and vaporised the warship. He and 141 got away safely. However, they were shot down over the Florida Keys and were stranded until a Pelican from Crow's Nest could retrive them. During that time, they fought off waves of Covenant soldiers in gureilla warfare, untill they were overwhelmed.

Once again, 141 was captured by a Chieftan, but this time was intentional, to allow 126 to kill him whith his attention drawn elsewhere. However, 141 was brutally beaten by the Jiralhanae and stabbed with a Sangheili Energy Sword, and his left arm was nearly severed. 126 rescued his comrade and the finaly achived pickup by Kilo 23, just before she was called to retrive John-117 after his orbital insertion. Cole was sent into surgery and would not be able to fight for several weeks. 126 was the last SPARTAN of Black Team able to fight the Covenant until the end of the Human-Covenant War.

[edit] Crucible

[edit] After the War

Shortly after the end of the Humam-Covenant War, Cole was deemed fit for duty once again, much to the surprise of 126. However, he had to wear a life support system built into his armor and a healing device for his still-severely wounded arm, but he hardly acknowledged their presence as more than a small inconvenience. He requested several weeks R&R and was granted permission to return to Thermopylae for his leave. However, other than a transmission that cryptically told UNSCDF headquarters that "They're gone...All of them...", nothing was heard for over 2 weeks. NCIS(Naval Criminal Investigation Service) was tasked with investigating what happened. They acknowledged 126's close relationship with 141 and ordered him on a new mission, in collaboration with the UNSC Navy, to find Cole, at any cost. 126 was puzzled by NCIS's interest with 141, but obliged.

After no signs of his or anyone else's life signs on the planet, 126 and Lt. Cdr McLaie were attacked by Covenant forces and were forced to return to a UNSC ship in orbit and called for backup. 13 ships arrived, but 40 Covenant ships and over 1,200 troops descended on the colony, and a hellish space battle ensued, duing which 126, McLaie, and a team of ODSTs fought their way into a Forerunner structure on the surface and found 141 battling Sentinels. After rescuing 141, they raced back to the fleet in orbit and 141 pushed expressly on the notion of NOVA bombing Thermopylae.

However, before they could launch the bomb, the planet changed, and its true nature was revealed; Thermopylae was actually a Forerunner Shield World similar to Onyx. After millions of Sentinels vaporised the Covenant ships, they UNSC fleet was told to leave the system and never come back by some intelligence on the planet. On its way out, the ships laid warning buoies around the system, warning anyone who enters of "ancient forces at work".

[edit] Decent

Cole, in his debriefing to MARSOC, detailed his entire story after sending the cryptic message.

He has arrived at Thermopylae Colony and found there were no life signs. He searched the colony, only found dead bodies. He found a makeshift hospital in the Mall and also found the Forerunner structure. Compelled by an innate curiosity, he descended below the planet's crust in the structure and found an entire Forerunner city inside, perfectly intact. After exploring for several weeks, he found a Sentinel and attempted to communicate with it.

However, similar to the SPARTAN-IIIs on Onyx, he was classified as a threat and was therefore hunted, but he, with his better training over the SPARTAN-IIIs, was able to evade the Sentinels better. However, he was nearing the end of his resources and limits when 126 and his team showed up. He also saw what appeared to be plans for something called "Omega 7". The captain of the U.N.S.C. Troy said they received a transmission with Omega 7 in it. 141 barely recalls the plans and said they also referenced some intelligence hidden away since before the Halos were fired. However, there was no clear information.

[edit] The Kelmond Incident

[edit] ONI Biological Asset Recruitment

In March 2554, SPARTAN-141 was conducting a mission in former Covenant-controlled space when his Pelican mysteriously "vanished" after entering the atmosphere of a planet. The UNSC Herald searched for hours before calling in several ONI operatives. After an entire week of SAR(Search And Rescue) operations, 141 was declared MIA. However, in reality, he had been snatched by ONI operatives, to be inducted into their Biological Assets program. Suffice it to say, whenever ONI needed a high-risk operation done, they called in their Biological and/or Technological Assets to complete the job. SPARTAN-141 became ONI Biological Asset 1458 in November 2554 and was assigned the job of catching a man named Jared H. Kelmond. Kelmond was suspected to be a double agent in ONI for the remnants of the United Rebel Front, relaying them classified information and executing ONI agents.

[edit] The Breadcrumbs

141 followed Kelmond as his shadow until July 2555, when he was instructed by ONI to kill Kelmond. However, Kelmond had already known that 141 was going to do so, and he escaped 141 by implanting a neurolitic compound in 141's armor, effectively paralysing him for days. During that time, Kelmond began taunting ONI by killing more of their operatives, mostly those entrenched in covert-ops. 141 began following him, as per ONI's orders, but Kelmond sensed this and began leaving messages for the SPARTAN about how the UNSC and ONI was using him like a puppet for their own purposes, that he was nothing more than an expendable piece of technology than a human being. After a while, Kelmond's notes stirred something in 141's head, and he realised that Kelmond was right.

[edit] The Confrontation

After 141 asked Kelmond to meet him, Kelmond began offering 141 the chance to travel with him, getting revenge on those who poisoned the UNSC's opinions and thoughts. 141 was about to accept when ONI activated a failsafe program embedded in 141's neural implants, causing his body to unquestionably follow their orders. While 141's mind watched, the failsafe program allowed ONI to make his body fight Kelmond. However, Kelmond surprised both ONI and 141 when he was able to fight back, and even begin to defeat 141.
Kelmond began telling 141 about how this was a prime example of the UNSC treating him like hardware, not a sentient being. 141 finally fought off ONI's control and was about to accept Kelmond's ideals, when he realised that Kelmond would just do the same. 141 concluded that he would rather fight for his race than betray that which he had fought so hard to protect. 141 then killed Kelmond with a force and anger that 141 surprised himself with.

[edit] SPARTAN Programs Disbanded

Shortly after that, in October 2555, ONI reported that they had "found" SPARTAN-141 and he was released back to active duty after healing from his wounds. However, 141's sense of duty had been crushed and could never heal. On October 19th, 2555, ONI dissolved all SPARTAN Programs and erased all information regarding 141's time as an ONI Biological Asset.

[edit] Personality

Cole Garrison's personality is noted as being extremely complex. Usually keeping to himself, but enjoys training with his Black Team teammates. He rarely opens up to anyone, even his SPARTAN brothers and sisters and maintains that "...it's not important[, my opinion]. I do what I have to." He prefers to think of himself as someone with experience, but always looking for new things, noting that he does something amazing or heroic when no one is looking. Indeed, most of his most triumphant moments were during solo missions. He tends to have a resentment towards The Office of Naval Intelligence and the NavSpecwar SPARTAN-IIs, due to the enormous amount of publicity they receive.

"Black Team earned as much, maybe more [publicity], than John-117 or the rest of the [NSW] SPARTANs, but he's publicized more, just because he happened to have destroyed a giant ring."
―141 on John-117's fame

[edit] Combat

His style of combat is a mix between CQB, Marksman and hand-to-hand moves. He prefers mid-range weapons, such as the BR55HB-SR and the XMR-8, but when push comes to shove, he excels with automatic weapons like the MA5C ICWS or M7/C SMG. His personal choice is the BR55HB-AR hand made for him by Phade Technology Industry. He has commented regularly on his low marks in long-range weapons, and tends to stay away from sniper weapons.

[edit] Weapons

141 has a multitude of weapons and firearms he uses. He collects many weapons, both Human and Covenant weapons and modifies them when not on assignment or training.
