- "I just don't understand this guy at all..."
- ―SPARTAN-B013 on John
John wears his hair at a standard length and usually maintains a calm demeanor at all times.
John is completely sane with no mental defects. He is the most quiet SPARTAN in Squad Silver aside from SPARTAN-B020, who is mute, and has been known to be extremely antisocial and sometimes even downright hostile with other trainees. He has been noted for his lack of teamwork skills and his general concern with the welfare of only one person: himself. He is often content to do as little fighting as possible if it means that he is not put into any undue danger and will resort to even the grisly task of corpse-robbing if he stands to turn a profit from doing so.
John usually carries a MA6A Individual Combat Weapon System into battle.
While a good fighter, John's greatest strength lies in his incredibly high intelligence and cunning. He has been known to outsmart almost everyone he fights in some way, even if he eventually winds up losing due to inferior strength or speed. He also disregards the honor that most other SPARTANs hold dear, making him more able to use "dirty" tactics in order to win fights that no other SPARTAN would even consider using.
John's loner mentality makes him extremely hard to work with and his sense of self preservation makes him generally unreliable in a firefight. He is almost universally disliked by the members of the 117th Special Operations Regiment, and the only ones generally willing to work with him reside in his own squad.
John was born into an extremely poor family on Earth before being inducted into the S-IV program. Before being conscripted into the SPARTAN program he learned about the hardships of life and was imbued with a desire to survive and succeed against the odds by "looking out for number one". He earned top marks in all of his classes and was admired by many for the fierceness with which he strove to better himself. Despite these successes, however, he was seen as a possible problem by his trainers, who noted his lack of faith and loyalty in the UNSC that was professed by most other trainees, as well as his complete disregard for the honor that was usually ingrained into the heart and soul of every trainee. A few years before the S-IVs' graduation, John became interested in a life outside the UNSC's control, most notably that of a mercenary. He made plans to retire from the UNSC military at the first opportunity and began looking into ways to accumulate wealth, not all of which were entirely legal.
