"Old Faithful, one might say. These Shield Ships have went through and seen many horrific wars and battles..."
―Captain Keyes, 2548

The Shield Ship (known also as Supply Ship) was a class of United Nations Space Command starship classification designed by Dr. Robert McLees in 2511. They were subsequently retired from service due to maintenance issues at the end of the Human-Covenant War.

[edit] Summary

As the horrific war waged against the Covenant continues, more support ships were needed to assist the warships. The UNSC's oldest yet gallant Shield Ship has been in service since 2511, marking its 41 years of service before it retired. The Shield Ship has experienced many battles and interplanetary conflicts throughout the whole UNSC campaign.

The Shield Ships has multiple chambers which are interchangeable into other variants (Surgical Room, Armory, Barracks, etc). Because of this, the layout for these ships always changes from time to time. After its retirement in 2552, the Shield Ships were given to local companies/corporations rather than simply abandoning them away.

[edit] Description

The Shield Ship is a stand-alone class starship, never intended to be superseded, designed as a troop and supply transport. By 2512, these ships had been converted into a rapid-response military transport, with armoury stockage and fleet support capabilities.

[edit] Function

The Shield Ship masses 68,000 metric tons and can carry an additional 20,000 tons of cargo. It measures 455 metres in length. As a troop carrier, the Shield Ship carries eight Pelican dropships and has sufficient life support capabilities for 90 crew and passengers to be supported indefinitely. In an emergency, as many as 2,000 troops can be placed in hibernation in the main cargo hangars for a maximum four days. Marines stationed on the ship each receive a small locker for uniforms and personal paraphernalia, while Officers are granted larger lockers for their personal items.

[edit] Capabilities

It is powered by a Repulse fusion reactor using high density lithium hydride for fuel instead of the standard deuterium reactor. The high density of the lithium hydride provides the ship with one whole year of power with only 900 cubic meters of fuel. The reactor itself is protected by armor and in an emergency, the reactor can vent pressure and eject dangerous liquids safely into space, preventing damage of the ship itself.

[edit] Defense

While virtually it was design for just troop and supply transport, several space incidents has prone the manufacturers to add a countermeasures against possible future attacks.

The Shield Ship also carries 20 decoy and two manoeuvrable decoy drones in aft ventral bay for defense purposes, while a jamming system allows the scrambling of electronic signals up to 6,000 miles away in space and up to 60 miles through an atmosphere. The Shield Ships's hull panels meanwhile are constructed from radar absorbing material, which reduces the ship's radar cross section to low levels. It is painted dark grey to keep the ship from being seen by the naked eye.
