A Task Force is a flexible and small naval formation, typically consisting between four to twelve vessels.

Typically, during the Human-Covenant War, the prototypical UNSC task force was between three to six destroyers and frigates, a highly mobile and flexible attack force that was employed for high-priority patrols or small strike missions. However, these smaller task forces were incapable of prolonged patrol without resupply. Regardless of their lack of sustainability, these small task forces became a staple of UNSC naval doctrine; a small but powerful collection of ships capable of independent deployment into combat situations.

However, with the swell of UNSC naval strength in the decades after the disastrous Great War, the fundamental concept of the task force would be substantially changed along with UNSC naval doctrine. During the dawn of the 27th century and the Galactic Era, the traditional task force would be comprised by no less than a dozen UNSC warships. The traditional Galactic Era-era task force would be composed by one or two Cyclops-class cruisers as command ships and heavy firepower, several Mjöllnir-class destroyers, and the rest mostly comprised of Hermes-class attack gunships and Aegis-class escort frigates. This upgraded naval task force packed a significantly higher amount of firepower, and was an independent formation used for reconnaissance, perimeter patrols, and was a basic fighting unit in heavier UNSC fleet actions.

Modern UNSC task forces were typically commanded by a one-star Commodore (O-7). Several task forces were grouped into a Battle Group, the next-higher level of unit organization within the UNSC Navy.
